First customers @ 5 pm. Oh no, door locked! Suddenly opens soon to leave the rushing falls behind and enter a world of quietude. Friendly host; We feel like the chef is preparing a very special and private meal just for us. He does. Appetizers: grilled shishito peppers on a slaw bed with a delicious sauce and goat dumplings & squash with a pomegranate reduction, Smiles and happy palates, we eat slowly as the restaurant fills. Very attentive and unobtrusive service. Great early evening ambiance. Main course: yellow fin tuna on a bed of mushrooms with a wonderful dashi sauce. Perfectly spiced. We shouldn't have but we did: apple bourbon crisp. 5 stars.

The go to place for my wife and I in the Chagrin Valley. You feel as if you're in a big city with a hidden gem. Chic atmosphere, great service and a wonderful chef come together for an outstanding experience. Seasonal menus, fresh ingredients ....what else can I say? Thanks for bringing some creativity to the East side.

The best way to describe Umami...PERFECT. Food is unbelievably exquisite. Wish every restaurant I go to had the same high standards. Staff make me feel like royalty.

Always amazing

Umami is one of a kind! The staff is always incredibly attentive, helpful, and charming! They make every visit feel like you are dining with friends! Their knowledge of the menu is impressive and they are always willing to offer suggestions if you aren't sure what to order. The food is absolutely stellar! There is something on the menu for everyone and the quality is top notch! The dishes have a lot of fun, creative twists on classic dishes. The food is always so fresh and you can tell that they source their ingredients locally. Honestly, it is some of the best fish in the Cleveland area! This is the perfect place for an intimate date night, a casual night with friends, or even a family dinner! You will not be sorry with anything you order here!

Excellent fresh food. I had s fresh garden green salad with apple cider vinaigrette dressing and Udon noodles with short rib and vegetables. The flavor was perfect!

Unfortunate for us I suppose. Front of house: Staff was fantastic and the seating/interior was very cool. Quaint space with perfect lighting made it a very intimate experience. Park at Heinens for an easy walk. Drinks: Umami 75 and the Rye Mule were unremarkable. Lemon slice still had seeds and was a bit ripped when sliced. Small Plates: At the suggestion of the waiter we went with the specials, Yellowtail Hamachi and Braised Crispy Sweetbreads. The yellowtail was fine in terms of texture though there was no real flavor of the candied lemon and jalapeno. The sweetbreads were chewy, not crispy, and a bit slopped on the plate. Sauce on the sweetbreads was very good. Main Course: Again with one of the specials, the Big Eye Tuna had no "spicy ginger" or "braised greens". Was also overcooked as the sear was grey going about a half inch into the center while being blackened on just one side. The worst offender was the Short Rib Udon. Best described as roast beef squares in the udon. Again with no taste of jalapeno the dish was a decent broth was nice greens and noodles but the meat absolutely was akin to a braised beef that was chopped up and tossed directly into a pot of broth to leech out all it's flavor and become a crock pot roast. No dessert as we had spent enough already. For 140 all in (30 of which was the tip for great service), we unfortunately won't be back. These are Lola prices that fail to deliver on quality.

Boyfriend took me for my birthday dinner, this time. We love Umami. Every time everything is absolutely amazing. I have celiac's disease and their entire menu aside from maybe 3 items are all safe for me to have. The owners and staff are great, ambiance is gentle. Love love love.

Very good food, nice atmosphere

My husband and I go here every year for our anniversary. - for the part 8 years. That should tell you how good it is. My husband and I aren't rich by any means but we save up and eat very well for that one day each year. The only gripe I have is that although they are kind to up, they never give us as much attention as other guests. We know we only go tthere once a year, but we tip well and to us this meal is a big deal. But as far as food is concerned this place can't be beat - hence why we keep going back year after year.

Really good food but a bit pricey

Truly fantastic restaurant. I love the fact that the food incorporates many ingredients not typically seen in Asian food (e.g. goat cheese, spätzle, cauliflower, etc.) but prepared in traditional Asian dishes. The service is also first class. Will be returning for sure.

A cute little restaraunt in a cute little town. The restaraunt is very intimate, warm, and cozy. The staff make you feel very welcomed. The food was top notch, but I feel could be priced lower. Also the restaraunt has a small selection of Japanese beers! I'd certainly go again to try other dishes.

Outstanding food and service

We loved Umami! The sushi was excellent (we like the real raw fish, not rolls, and they did it well). The highlight was beef udon noodles - we shared an entree and the flavor was awesome. I'd recommend a reservation if you are going at a busy time.

Amazing restaurant! First visit tonight and I can't wait to go back to try more. The sushi was delicious and wonderfully fresh. Be sure to get to goat cheese dumplings. They're unbelievable! I really enjoyed my scallops but the tuna was even better! Great service - super attentive and made great recommendations. I could not have asked for more. So good!

Make a reservation if you want to eat at this awesome little restaurant that is in the heart of downtown chagrin falls.

Get the goat cheese dumplings. Really. Stop what you're doing now and get yourself here for some dumplings.

Intimate setting, with tables for two, brick walls, a huge piece of slate with the specials written on it, easy view into the cooking area. Service was attentive. Food was creative (the vegetarian egg rolls were like a tempura batter - delicious), goat cheese dumplings, pompano....desserts were fabulous. Would recommend!

Had a wonderful lunch in one of cool window tables. Had a seafood hot pot that was a good value @ $10.
